Summer Opportunities for Incoming Transfer Students
Enrolling in summer courses will jumpstart your UChicago experience and immerse you in the distinctive academic culture of the College and life on the Hyde Park Campus.
Choose from our Humanities & Writing Core 6-week program designed for incoming transfer students, or get a head start on your major or other Core requirements. These courses will help you integrate into the student community, engage with peers, and launch the path to your degree.
Courses open to Incoming Transfer Students are offered in July (Session 2 - remote options only), August (Sessions 3 and 4) and September Term. Use the Course Finder to search for courses marked "open to transfer students" or "transfer students only."
If choosing to enroll in summer courses, international students must enroll in three courses, of which one may be a remotely taught course. International students include international students previously enrolled in a US institution and students transferring from abroad.

Transfer Students
Summer Courses Open to Incoming Transfer Students
The Humanities Core is the foundation of the UChicago College curriculum. Together with the Writing Core requirement, these sequences teach students to read closely, think critically, and write effectively. In small discussion-based seminars, students learn and practice the art of oral argument and dialogue, entering deep and wide-ranging conversations with faculty and other students. Join other incoming transfer students in community on campus this summer and get a head start on learning the skills and habits of mind that will inform your studies here, in Humanities and Writing Core courses -- and a residential program -- designed especially for incoming transfer students.

Please become familiar with the range of policies to follow and the resources available to you as incoming students:
Housing Information
Transfer students enrolled in in-person Summer classes are welcome to live on campus during their program. Transfer students are part of a vibrant Summer Session community in one of the residential Houses on campus. Once students receive their course confirmation in their UChicago Account and confirm their participation, the housing form will be emailed to students.
Depending on your course registration, you have three options:
The housing plan for the six-week Summer program includes single or double rooms for students, and a meal plan with Maroon Dollars. They can be used in both our all-you-care-to-eat residential dining commons as well as multiple on-campus cafes.
Six-Week Courses
in Humanities & Writing, Economics or Computer Science: You will be automatically enrolled in campus housing while these programs are in session (8/3-9/12). You will move into your permanent Autumn Quarter housing assignment on Saturday, September 12, before other transfer and first-year students arrive for Orientation in late September. You may reside in your Autumn Quarter room during the 9/12-9/22 interim period if you opt in, or you can return home on September 12 and return to campus on September 22.
Other Courses:
Housing is available, by request, for all students enrolled in in-person Summer and September Term courses.
Commuters:
Students who live in the Chicago area may commute to the Hyde Park campus, but will not receive a dining plan or supplemental programs and events.
Six-week program students are expected to arrive on campus on Sunday, August 2. Check-in begins at 10am and closes at 4pm at Campus North Residential Commons, 5500 S. University Ave., Chicago, IL 60637.
Please note: You cannot check into the residence hall before 10am. Students enrolled in other courses who request housing may have different moving dates.
Our residential staff, consisting of current UChicago students, will be present to welcome you. Dinner will be served at the residential dining commons between 5:30-7:30pm. After dinner, the staff will hold a mandatory House meeting at 8pm in the lounge. More details will be provided at check-in.
Getting to Campus: You should arrange your own transportation to campus. Students coming from Midway or O’Hare airports can arrive via ride sharing apps, taxis, or public transportation. Many students use Go Airport Express, a one flat-rate option, which services both Midway and O'Hare.
Throughout the program, you'll be invited to activities and events that will begin your orientation to campus resources, connect you with peers, and help you explore the city of Chicago.
In your House community, the residential staff will be available for advice and mentoring. They will plan social events to help build community among the cohort. Our traditional late night “Study Breaks” continue the decades-long tradition of sharing comfort food among students immersed in their studies.
Summer programming also includes events in residence to connect you with various student services offices (Study Abroad, Research and Fellowships, Dean’s Office, etc.)
The city of Chicago offers innumerable choices for exploration and socializing, and our staff members lead trips to museums, shopping, stage shows, sporting events and other options.
Whether you share your interests with the residential staff and create a custom trip or join us on a pre-planned event as you explore the Windy City, outside the classroom events will immerse you in your new community.
